This painting was inspired by a visit to the Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain. The cross-cultural architecture of this UNESCO site is reimagined in bold strokes and delicate layers of paint with space for interpretation. Inside the Mezquita a hypnotic array of striped arches repeats again and again, seemingly for infinity; each one an entrance portal, yet never a departure. Meanwhile, the outside courtyard is graced with a clock tower and blossoming orange trees. The scent of Neroli mingles with the excitable whispers of visitors. Ancient mosaics, calligraphy and ornate patterns compliment the shady orange grove, suggested here with an arc of gold echoing the wonderous interior archways. This painting is an attempt to reveal the tranquil, timeless essence of this special place.
